Having worked with Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith on commercials, Joel was given the opportunity to work on his first major film "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The project, which took one and a half years to complete, involved some of the most complex art department work attempted on a feature film to date. Overseeing a team of 36, Joel employed visual effects specialists allowing him to incorporate effects planning into the structure of his designs. This practice was aided by the use of state of the art computer animated set designs, which Joel uses for most of his work. Joel has also re-teamed with Hammer and Tongs on the Sundance favourite "Son of Rambow".
Joel began his career as a trainee at Jim Henson's Creature Shop assisting on films such as "The Flintstones" and "The Neverending Story". Joel also has a successful career as the designer of numerous commercials for Directors such as Spike Jonze, Garth Jennings, Andy Morahan and Shane Meadows.

'Using VFX specialists to help incorporate effects planning into the structure of production design is now a necessity'.
During work as the Production Designer on 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy' Joel developed a process that helped bridge the gap between the traditional world of production and the rapidly developing digital world of post-production.
What eventually came from this process was a small boutique company aimed at resolving all of the issues that are encompassed in the modern day digital art department.
Painting Practice is the kind of place that gives designers, directors and producers the freedom to develop their ideas and extend the creative possibilities through a strong understanding of where the real world ends and the digital one begins.
Whether it be through pre-viz, concept design, set design, or mattepainting, Painting Practice is more than capable of dealing with any project, both from a creative standpoint and also in a purely technical capacity.
By using highly accurate previs work to never 'over-build', this resource dynamically helps to reduce the concerns that exist on a project with high expectations and a lower budget.
Our experience and understanding in film, TV, and commercial production means that we can rise to any challenge with re-assuring confidence that everything is possible.
